Lucy and Blue

Our Story

Lucy & Blue began with a real-life partnership between Lucy Macleod, a senior fire officer, and Blue, her trauma and wellbeing dog.

After more than 17 years in the Fire and Rescue Service, Lucy has spent her career responding to emergencies, leading teams and working in traditionally male-dominated environments. Along the way, she has seen first-hand the importance of representation, wellbeing, teamwork and having the confidence to be yourself.

Then came Blue. Lucy describes him as her “buffer and bridge” the buffer that can soften some of life's harder moments, and the bridge that helps people connect, talk and sometimes simply feel a little safer.

Their partnership inspired the Lucy & Blue book series: exciting, age-appropriate adventures based around the real world of emergency response, rescue and the extraordinary people and animals who help others.

Each story combines adventure with practical safety messages, real-life role models and a little bit of Blue-shaped chaos.

Because heroes don't all look the same. Some wear uniforms. Some wear harnesses. Some have four paws and some smell suspiciously of biscuits!

Our Mission Changing the story, one adventure at a time.

Lucy & Blue exists to entertain, educate and challenge perceptions.

At its heart is a belief that representation matters. The words and images children encounter help shape their understanding of who can be a firefighter, rescuer, leader or hero.

That is why our stories deliberately challenge outdated language and stereotypes, celebrate women in traditionally male-dominated roles and introduce children to real people doing extraordinary jobs.

But our mission goes further than gender.

Through the books, educational and community visits, Lucy's speaking and Blue's unique ability to connect with people, we explore safety, careers, equality, diversity, wellbeing, resilience, teamwork and kindness.

We want children to be curious about the world around them, confident enough to challenge stereotypes and ambitious enough to imagine themselves somewhere they may never have thought they belonged.

And we want adults to think about those things too.

Because changing perceptions doesn't happen through one book or one conversation. It happens when we keep showing people that there is more than one way to look like a leader, a rescuer or a role model.

When you can see it, you can believe it. And when you believe it, you can become it.

Behind the Badge

There’s much more to Lucy & Blue than uniforms, emergencies, books and biscuits.

When they’re not working, writing, visiting communities or finding inspiration for their next adventure, you’ll often find them by the sea, walking, paddle boarding, collecting sea glass or watching the sun go down. Blue will usually be searching for snacks!

At the heart of Lucy & Blue is friendship, adventure and a belief that we can all make a difference, whether that’s doing something brave, showing someone kindness or simply being there when somebody needs a helping hand.

Be brave. Be kind. Be yourself. And when you climb the ladder, always leave it down and offer a helping hand to the person coming next.

Lucy and Blue Worrying wildfires

Things are heating up for Lucy and Blue in their fourth adventure!

When wildfire threatens, Lucy and Blue discover just how quickly conditions can change and how firefighters work together to protect people, animals and communities.

Joining them in Worrying Wildfires are real-life firefighter and former England, Fulham and Arsenal Women footballer Kim Jerray-Silver, alongside Scott Hewson, bringing real operational experience into Lucy and Blue's latest adventure.

Through an exciting and age-appropriate story, young readers discover more about wildfires, the challenges firefighters face and why preparation, teamwork and knowing what to do in an emergency are so important.

Like every Lucy & Blue adventure, Worrying Wildfires combines a great story with real people, practical safety messages and positive role models, helping children understand more about the extraordinary people who work to keep our communities safe.

A portion of the profits from every copy of Worrying Wildfires goes to Broken Biscuits, a charity dedicated to supporting disabled animals and helping them live happy, fulfilling lives.

As a huge animal lover and proud dog mum to Blue, supporting a charity that believes disability should never mean an animal is less deserving of love, opportunity or a full life felt like a perfect fit for Lucy.

The message also sits beautifully alongside everything Lucy & Blue represents: being different doesn't make you less capable, less valuable or less deserving of the chance to thrive. So every copy of Worrying Wildfires doesn't just help children learn about wildfire safety and the people who respond when things go wrong. It also helps give something back to animals who need a little extra support of their own.

Community, Representation and Education

Challenging stereotypes. Creating conversations. Inspiring what comes next.

Lucy is passionate about challenging outdated stereotypes and helping people see that careers, leadership and opportunity should never be defined by gender, background or what somebody else thinks you should be.

Working in a traditionally male-dominated profession, Lucy knows how powerful representation can be. Through Lucy & Blue, her lived experience and more than 17 years in the Fire and Rescue Service, she creates engaging conversations around careers, equality, diversity, inclusion, wellbeing, resilience and breaking down barriers.

At the heart of it all is a simple message

You can be who you want to be. Not what others tell you to be.

Visits, Talks & Workshops

Lucy offers two free visits each month to educational and community settings, with sessions tailored to the people in the room rather than following a one-size-fits-all format.

That could mean a fun Lucy & Blue story session for nursery children, an interactive safety and careers session for a school, a conversation with teenagers about stereotypes and future choices, a university discussion about leadership and inclusion, or a talk for a women's, community or professional group.

Sessions can be delivered by Lucy, or by Lucy & Blue together, depending on the setting and requirements.

What Can We Talk About?

Every session is different, but topics can include:

  • Careers without limits – challenging assumptions about who can do particular jobs and encouraging people to explore where their interests could take them.
  • Women in male-dominated environments – Lucy's experience of building a career, leading teams and challenging expectations within the Fire and Rescue Service.
  • Equality, diversity & representation – why being able to see people like ourselves matters and how language, stereotypes and unconscious assumptions can influence opportunity.
  • Wellbeing & resilience – honest, age-appropriate conversations about mental health, asking for help, supporting one another and understanding that strength can look different for everyone.
  • Leadership & allyship – creating psychologically safe environments, using our influence positively and remembering to put the ladder back down for the person coming behind us.
  • Emergency services & safety – bringing the world of Lucy & Blue to life through real experiences, practical safety messages and the people and animals who help keep communities safe.
  • Reading & storytelling – interactive readings from the Lucy & Blue series, exploring the real people, adventures and messages behind the books.

From Little Readers to Future Leaders

There is no single age group for these conversations.

Lucy & Blue sessions can be adapted for nurseries and early years settings, primary and secondary schools, colleges, universities, careers events, youth organisations, women's groups, community organisations and professional networks.

For younger audiences, that might mean stories, Blue, safety and discovering that firefighters come in all shapes and sizes.

For older groups, the conversation can explore careers, leadership, gender equality, mental health, resilience, allyship and what it really means to challenge stereotypes in the workplace.

Whatever the setting, the aim remains the same: to create a safe, positive conversation that leaves people thinking differently about themselves, other people and what might be possible.
